What about Foreign Movies in Indonesia?
So what’s happening with our summer movies? Will we still able to watch them this summer in cinemas nearby? Or should you start booking ticket and watch those box office movies in Singapore or Malaysia?
In Indonesia, there are seven distributors of imported movies. They are PT. Camila Internusa Film, PT.Satrya Perkasa Esthetika Film, PT. Amero Mitra Film, Jive Entertainment, PT. Parkit Film, PT. Teguh Bakti Mandiri, and Rapi Films. PT. Camila Internusa Film is one of the oldest distributors of imported movies which specializing on importing movies produced by Sony/Columbia, Universal, and Paramount. PT. Satrya Perkasa Esthetika Film specializes on importing Hollywood movies produced 20th Century Fox, Disney, and Warner Bros. PT. Amero Mitra Film also specializes on importing Hollywood movies, but not from the Big Six Studios, they imports movies produced by The Weinstein Company, Lionsgate, Screen Gems, Summit, and CBS. PT. Camila Internusa Film and PT. Satrya Perkasa Esthetika Film are facing tax problem with our government so until it’s solved, we won’t be able to enjoy movies produced by Big Six Studios, but we’re still able to watch movies produced by smaller studios which are imported by PT. Amero Mitra Film, such as Limitless, Source Code, and Rabbit Hole.
On June 17th 2011, our Minister of Finance, Mr. Agus Martowardojo, announced the settlement of the new rate of import duties which is now equivalent and counted by unit, Rp 21.000,00 – Rp 22.000,00 per minutes of one copy. It was legalized when the minister signed the regulation on June 16th 2011 (Peraturan Menteri Keuangan Nomor 90/PMK.011/2011 Tentang Perubahan Kedelapan Atas Peraturan Menteri Keuangan Nomor 110/PMK.010/2006 Tentang Penetapan Sistem Klasifikasi Barang Dan Pembebanan Tarif Bea Masuk Atas Barang Impor). Moreover, the percentage tariff will be found out after the movies are played so the counting takes more time and more complicated because it will be depending on the duration. Prior to this new regulation, the import duties of foreign movies were 10% of the royalty. The Minister of Finance suggest to Hollywood movies’ producer to incorporate with other importers/distributors that not have problem with the government since there’re still a lot of distributors who still able to be worked together with. Mr. Martowardojo also emphasized that it’s been agreed that this problem is not occurred between the producers that incorporated in Motion Picture Association (MPA) with our government, but as the result of the importers who haven’t fulfill their obligation to pay the royalty to the government.
