About Us
ALSA was born on May 18th 1989 when a group of Indonesian law students came up with the idea of forming an organization where they could foster better relations, as well as promote understanding and appreciation of different legal systems of ASEAN member countries, along with building friendship among other law students throughout ASEAN borders. Then they established the organization named ASEAN Law Students’ Association (ALSA) in 1989 which consisted of Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Philipines. The same vision also was felt by the other countries from Asia, such as law students from Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. Thus, in the year of 1996, these young law students formed an organization under the name of Asian Law Students’ Association (ALSA).
As the time goes by and with the influence of the globalization era, international trade, and the rapid improvement of information technology, ASEAN Law Students’ Association (ALSA) and also Asian Law Students’ Association (ALSA) are trying to move forward by expanding the network to the scope of the region of Asian countries. Therefore, by an agreement that was signed on 7th September 2002 a merge between ASEAN Law Students’ Association (Japan, Korea, Taiwan) was performed into a single association. As a result, it was agreed that such Tokyo Agreement gave birth to a new international law students’ association representing all law students around Asia, under the name of the ASIAN LAW STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION (ALSA). Such agreement was taken into force by the Bangkok Agreement that was signed in the ALSA Conference, Bangkok, Thailand on 23rd October 2003 – along with the enrollment ofChina andHong Kong as the members. Later, after the ALSA Forum 2009 conducted in Philipines, Bangladesh had joined in ALSA as its member. Additionaly, in ALSA Forum 2010 in Korea, it’s very honor that Brunei become one of its newest member.
Thus, until this current time, ALSA has the following official members which are, Bangladesh, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Malaysia, Philiphines, Singapore, and Thailand. ALSA in still embarking a programmatic approach in extending its membership to other Asian countries to ensure on the existence of a broad perspective in the very spirit of ALSA.
