Hai ALSAians! After you looked at the picture, surely most of you have known or at least have ever seen his face. Or if you haven’t known him, he is Raditya Kosasih or well-known as Bang Kos. He graduated from Law Faculty University of Indonesia in 2009. He is popular enough in ALSA LC UI because he was active in board of ALSA, even became the Executive Director of ALSA. He is one of ALSA’s most active alumni and often participated in ALSA’s events.
In his point of view, generally ALSA is a non-academic medium of learning which is very good for law school students, especially for students of law faculty in University of Indonesia. The activities are various and its extensive network (national and international scope) provide opportunities for all members to improve their soft-skills. Moreover, he said that for some people, ALSA is not just an organization which are followed to fill their spare time in campus, but ALSA has become their second family on campus. Solid alumni network also shows that ALSA is an organization that is strong enough and continuously growing since it was first established in 1989.
Bang Kos’ career in ALSA started from a position as newsletter staff, which is the part of the Internal Public Relations at that time. The team-member of newsletter were consisted of Muthia, Ibom, and Ridho of batch 2005, and they succeed forming a very solid team. Even with a small team, they could proudly published three newsletters during the stewardship of ALSA LC UI 2006-2007. In that year, he was also actively involved in ALSA’s activities organized by his batchmates, such as E-Comp 2007 as coordinator of funding, OLMA 2007 in event division, and ALSA Asian Forum as security and the legal course staff.
In 2007-2008, he was entrusted by Bianca (Director ALSA LCUI 2007-2008) to become Manager of External Affairs, along with Bagus Radhityo as Vice Manager of External Affairs. He began actively participated in national and international events which organized by ALSA. In the same year, he also participated in ALSA Moot Court Competition in Yogyakarta and the International Moot Court Competition at the ALSA Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Finally, in 2008-2009, he decided to become the Director of ALSA LC UI 2008-2009 along with Muthia (2005), Ibom (2005) and Yvonne (2006) as Board of Directors. They have tried to make several new breakthroughs through local activities, named Legal Discussion and SALSA (Arisan ALSA). He stated that those past year has become a pretty impressive year because he had to divide his time between ALSA and on the other hand he had to finish his thesis. Fortunately both ended beautifully, he could carry out his stewardship until the end and also finished the thesis on time so he can graduated at the expected Bang Kos considers that ALSA is the best organization in which he has been involved, even ALSA has become his second family over the campus. He learned about many important things during actively involved in ALSA LCUI, which are very useful for preparing himself to enter the career world. The happiness and sorrow that he experienced are also the most valuable experiences he got in ALSA. He said that he would have never regretted everything that have been sacrificed to be active in ALSA, because all paid off with the experience and kinship he has now.
For ALSAians, Bang Kos suggested us to use the available opportunity to develop ourselves in ALSA as well. ALSA provides opportunity for its member to develop theirselves maximally and also provides any experiences we want to get. Each person has different way to be active in ALSA, but ALSA provides equal opportunity for everyone to be active in it. Now, it depends on how you can take advantage of this opportunity as well.
Pleasant Surprises and Priceless Experiences
Rosewitha Irawaty S.H., M.L.I., or usually called Mbak Ira, was an ALSA member from batch 1996. In the interview held in Dean Secretary office, she told us that in the beginning she never knew why she chose ALSA instead of joining other organizations. Her first career experience in ALSA was becoming a staff member of External Affairs. One year later, she was chosen as the Secretary of ALSA. At that time, there was no International Board which covers the Asia region but only South East Asia. Mbak Ira also joined the regional board and sat as Coordinator of Publication who was responsible for the publication of ALSA Regional ASEAN events.
Mbak Ira, who is now the lecturer of several lessons at Law Faculty Universitas Indonesia, said that she and her batch were preparing for ALSA Conference 1999 during the monetary crisis in Indonesia. ALSA Conference 1999 was also merged with ALSA English Day (now ALSA E-Comp-red). They faced a lot of problems, especially due to the crisis, but finally they could manage to overcome the obstacles well.
Mbak Ira shared a lot about the preparation of this big event. ALSA Conference 1999 was held in Jakarta thus it became ALSA Local Chapter Universitas Indonesia’s responsibility to host the event. She was appointed to be the Treasurer of the event. The committee had to prepare everything from zero, including the fund. They did a very interesting way to cover the operational cost of the event, such as by selling snacks, handicraft, souvenirs, or anything.
Finally, they could acquire the funds needed to start the event and also managed to work with the government and even managed to get an audience with the governor during dinner at Ancol. This turn of events not only positively contributed economically, but also increased the quality of the event.
Even if the ALSA members at that time consisted of a few peer groups, but when it came to organize an event, there’s no such thing could be the barrier for them to work together. That’s a big key in organizing an event, everyone has to be professional and able to work well with anyone. Even a few committees were not the member of ALSA, but they had a great time in organizing this event together with the ALSAians.
The ALSA Conference 1999 and English Day finally went very well as what they expected. They gained sufficient funds and it could cover all things they need during the preparation and the D-Day. They could make it even more prestigious as the government also contributed to the event.
Mbak Ira admitted that she gained a lot of things from her participation in ALSA. When we asked her to describe ALSA in one word, she took a quite long time to think and finally she said experience. She could not believe that she could organize an international event during the crisis. Moreover, she got a lot of friends by joining ALSA. She learned how to deal with someone she met and to make planning before she does something. Her experience in ALSA made her a better person by increasing her soft skills.
She has a message to all the current members of ALSA that you must try to participate as much as you can in ALSA and use this chance to improve yourself well. As we are still students, we have to build a wide network because it will help us someday. We have to make a good planning and maintain good relationships with the people who help you during the process. Finally, she stated that it’s necessary to balance academic activity with organizational experiences to make a complete learning experience, both in knowledge and soft skills. (DH)
Our Fellow ALSAians : Ario Triwibowo
Started with a quick visit to a friend’s house in Bandung and Jatinangor, Ario Triwibowo Yudhoatmodjo (23) has become a full time backpacker and traveller blogger as well as photographer and a second-hand online shop owner.
Born on 4th August 1987 in Jakarta, Ario Triwibowo is a batch 2005 ALSA alumnus. He once joined the ALSA board as the Newsletter Coordinator, which is the subordinate of External Public Relationship Manager.
Ario started his backpacking life when he was still in his beginning years of university student. He visited his university friends in Badung and Jatinangor. As times passed by, he began to enjoy experiencing new and rare activities which other common people usually do not feel that comfortable or prestigious to try. He believes that each place has its unique impressing feature. He claimed that he hasn’t been to many places but actually he’s been to several holiday spots which mostly located in Java Island, such as Thousands Islands, Bandung, Anyer, Halimun Mountain in Banten, Ujung Kulon, Batu Karas, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Sidoardjo, Mojokerto, Nganjuk, Blitar, Madura backpacking. He has also visited many places in East Java and Bali for several times. A few weeks ago he travelled to Padang. He said that he never get bored with travelling routine.
Arranging a backpacking vacation is not as hard as managing a normal holiday. Pressed expense and tight budget might be the main difference among the two types of holiday. But we can assure you that backpacking trip won’t be less enjoyable. He also said that minimum budget reflects how we are going to spend our time enjoying life. That is why at some point, Ario does not have special preparation for his upcoming trip. Yet, having enough and suitable information of the place we plan to visit is nothing but a must. Browsing the internet or asking people who has visited the place could give us more advantage, especially when we deal with remote area with minimum facilities, such as no ATM or good motel. Another thing we must consider seriously is the budget, as Ario agree on, always prepare extra cash for some unexpected situation. The amount of the money you may expense always depends on your destination. Even backpacking to the Eastern Indonesia, eventually could cost you about Rp.7.000.000,00. One thing to remember is that you can always find ways to minimize you budget such as taking care of the high season or travelling in groups.
There are no worthless experiences in travelling and backpacking, thus taking some photos might leave sweet memory of those experiences as Ario always does and puts in his blog (http://jejak-wisata.blogspot.com/). You will always be amazed of the way nature shows its beauty and have the opportunity to enjoy it.
It might seem not that easy to arrange a holiday, but there are some tips for backpacking-beginners that Ario shared to us. First, gather enough information of the place you want to explore, including the extra cash just in case there will be something incindental. Second, try the place that is affordable in distance as a good starting point, for example West Java region. It might seem to be near but West Java actually it has many beautiful places which remain untouched by modernization. Third, enjoy your holiday with your friends to add more fun, well, at least if you are lack of money, you still can owe your friends. Fourth, take care of the high season ticketing to reduce your budget if you plan to go somewhere that needs special budget on tickets or have a good preparation for weather change will help you to prepare your physic to face several condition such as sea nausea if you go by ship. You also should bring your own first aid kit. The last but not the least, made the best the use of your time in university as you might not have much free time if you have started working.
Have a fun holiday and try to document your trip. (EDH)
Najwa Shihab
Who doesn’t know Najwa Shihab, alumni of FHUI who become a famous Indonesian anchor, producer, and reporter? But do you know if she’s one of the board member both at the ALSA Local Chapter Universitas Indonesia and International Board in the year 1998-2000? Najwa Shihab, or commonly called Mbak Nana, chose to join in ALSA in order to expand her networking opportunities with other law students in Asia and she also heard a lot of interesting stories about ALSA from her seniors who had previously joined ALSA. Mbak Nana, who graduated in 2000, was the Manager of External Affairs of ALSA LC UI in the year 1998 to 1999 which at that time was a law student associations of ASEAN, not Asia. Mbak Nana also served as the part of Internal Affairs which one of its work program was to teach English to the children of the FHUI’s employees every Sunday. While serving as Manager of External Affairs, she successfully held an English competition for students in Jakarta and West Java, even though Indonesia was in the middle of the financial crisis. Now, the English competition has been increasingly developed and now it’s known as ALSA E-Comp which is held every year. One memorable experience when organizing ALSA E-Comp was when the committee had to find the adjudicators for the newscast competition which was very hard at that time, but now, a few years later, Mbak Nana has became a well-known newscaster in Indonesia. In addition, Mbak Nana was the Project Manager and one of the panelists of the 8th Annual ASEAN Law Students’ Association Conference in 1998 which was held in Jakarta. Mbak Nana who was responsible for the conference, faced a lot of challenging and fun experiences, especially the event was held when the regime of President Soeharto just ended and the financial crisis was hitting Indonesia. The external challenge she can’t ever forget is when the committee had to convince the participants from other countries to attend this event although our country’s security condition was still unstable at that time and the internal challenge was to get the funds and the proper location. The conference was finally ended with a great success, it’s even managed to held a hearing with President B.J.Habibie and the participants were also invited to several dinners with ministers and state officials, including Minister of Health, Ministry of Education, and Governor of Jakarta at the time it. Not only that, the conference managed to get surplus that’s given for ALSA LC UI trust fund. Besides focusing on the local chapter, Mbak Nana also served as Deputy Secretary General of ASEAN Law Students’ Association in 1999-2000. Mbak Nana, who also rewarded as an Honored Student or Mapres FHUI, told that there’re a lot of benefits that we’ll earn by joining organizations, such as learning to deal with others, convincing others, and expressing our thoughts and opinions. And by being the member of ALSA, we will have a different experience because ALSA is a big organization, it’s not only a local organization, but also an international organization. Mbak Nana, who was one of the panelists of the Workshop and Seminar for ASEAN Law Students’ Association, the National University of Singapore in 2000, still keep in touch with her ALSA friends from other countries who met during ALSA’s international events. Mbak Nana also emphasized the value of networking, she said that networking is something very precious and it can not be purchased, you must earn it by yourself. Mbak Nana also added that she was proud to be part of ALSA because by joining ALSA, her college-life became more colorful and super-duper fun. Mbak Nana recommends all new students of FHUI (Maba 2010) or who have not affiliated yet with ALSA ALSA to become a member soon. She said “Be part of ALSA, you won’t regret it!”. Thank you Mbak Nana!
