Since its first establishment in 1989, ALSA has been becoming a place for more than 3000 intelligent- broad minded law students from all over Asia to develop their self-potential and combat in the globalization era through justice. Presenting for two decades, ALSA consists of over hundred of universities in Asia. Moreover, ALSA has been expanding its network through the cooperation with Australian Law Students' Association (AusLA), and European Law Students' Association (ELSA).
Let's look back to the history of ALSA.
May 18th 1989 : THE FIRST ESTABLISHMENT OF ALSA (ASEAN LAW STUDENTS' ASSOCIATION)
ALSA was formed by a group of law students from ASEAN members, which are Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. The establishment of ALSA was signed in the first ALSA Conference, in Jakarta.
The original purposes of ALSA's establishment were to promote the understanding and appreciation to ALSA members' different system, to develop friendship in the diversity of culture, and as the place to exchange ideas and knowledge about law and other social issues.
1996 : THE ESTABLISHMENT OF ALSA JAPAN
ALSA Japan was established through the vision of European Law Students' Association (ELSA).
1998 : THE ESTABLISHMENT OF ALSA KOREA
The Centre of National Committee of ALSA Korea was first established by Seoul National University Law School through the ALSA Seoul National University. In 2002, Ewha Woman's University also joined ALSA Korea.
2001 : SEOUL AGREEMENT
A meeting between ALSA and The International Law Students' Association of Peking University (ILSA PKU), The International Department of Legal Aid Association of Peking University, Law Association, Hong Kong University Students' Union of The University of Hong Kong (LA, HKUSU), ALSA Japan, ALSA Korea, and ALSA Taiwan, was held. The result of the meeting is later known as The Seoul Declaration (Seoul Agreement).
September 7th 2002 : TOKYO AGREEMENT
ALSA and a group of law students from Asia countries such as Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong agreed to unify their organization through Tokyo Agreement, and established the Asian Law Students' Association (ALSA).
October 23rd 2003 : BANGKOK CONFERENCE
The First Conference of Asian Law Students' Association (ALSA)
The name of Asian Law Students' Association (ALSA) was legally used in Bangkok, Thailand. Later on, this conference is well known as the Bangkok Conference.
March 2005 :
The name of Asian Law Students' Association was legally used in Indonesia since The 12th ALSA National Assembly which is held by ALSA Local Chapter Jember University.
2009 : ALSA TODAY
Now, ALSA consists of 10 member countries, which are China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwαn, Thailand, and Malaysia.
ALSA National Chapter Indonesia consists of 12 Local Chapters, which are Syiah Kuala University, Sriwijaya University, Hasanudin University, Airlangga University, Jember University, University of Indonesia, Brawijaya University, Gadjah Mada University, Sam Ratulangi University, Padjajaran University, Diponegoro University, and Jenderal Soedirman University.
